TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE DIVISION ONE: Win takes Freshford top of the table
12:00pm Monday 13th January 2014 in Sport
FRESHFORD United moved top of Trowbridge Windows & Conservatories, Trowbridge League, Division One table with a dominant 8-0 win against battling Calne Eagles, in a win which was inspired by a superb five-goal performance from veteran striker Steve Roddy.
Calne have found their debut season in first division football a very tough experience, but this has been made far worse by a catalogue of injuries that has left them extremely short on experience within the squad.
This week they also lost the services of their captain Stuart Windsor, who after five seasons of exceptional service, has moved to Calne Town. Indeed, Windsor marked his debut for his new club today with a goal in a 2-2 draw against Cribbs FC.
Roddy stole the show with a performance of quality that Calne simply could not match. After a seemingly comfortable start for the away side, they found themselves behind after 12 minutes when Mark Gerrish fired home an unstoppable shot from just inside the box.
Ten minutes later they fell further behind when Roddy finished well at the back post. Moments later Roddy scored his second from a brilliantly-taken free kick.
Just before half time, Roddy completed his hat-trick with another uncompromising finish. Despite continuing to battle gamely, Calne’s punishment continued into the second half as Freshford continued to be clinical in their play.
Roddy added another two to his tally during the half. Ricky Trott and Nick Ross also got on the score sheet to complete the 8-0 score, which moved Freshford top of the table, ahead of North Bradley who were without a fixture.
Semington Magpies 0 Westbury United Reserves 5
SEMINGTON Magpies suffered their first loss in nine league outings after they were beaten 5-0 by a Westbury United Reserves side who dominated most of the game but before finding their shooting boots in a second period that saw them score all five of their goals to run out deserved winners.
Had it not been for keeper Ricky King’s first-half heroics, Semington could have been dead and buried at the break but a string of fine saves kept his team in the game.
Semington managed to withstand a second half onslaught from Westbury but once Marc Lanfear made the breakthrough on 70 minutes the floodgates opened. Nick Taylor doubled Westbury’s advantage before Ashley Easton knocked home number three to end any hopes of a Semington revival.
Westbury goalkeeper Alex Shaftoe added number four from the penalty spot and a second from Ashley Easton, also from the penalty spot wrapped up a victory for Jason Edwards' side that moved them from fifth to third in the standings as they leapfrogged their hosts who had started the game above them in the table.
Warminster Town Reserves 1 Lamb FC 1
A VASTLY-IMPROVED Warminster Town Reserves side, who were beaten 4-2 by the Lamb FC when they met earlier in the season showed just how far they have come on since that defeat by holding their guests at Weymouth Street to a 1-1 draw as they come from behind to claim a share of the spoils, but thanks to two late dismissals were almost undone at the death.
An evenly-matched contest saw Bradley Witham give Lamb their half-time lead. Matt Dyer replied for Warminster in the second period before they had James Collett and Shaun Sheppard sent off late on.
With Warminster done by two players, Lamb almost stole victory in the final couple of minutes, but they were saved by an untimely miss from Tom Blackman who really should have won it for his side but missed with an effort that looked easier to score as the game ended all-square.
