RUGBY: Trowbridge blow as visitors claim points
10:00am Friday 31st January 2014 in Sport
TROWBRIDGE coach Steve Ojomoh had no complaints as his side’s 13-match unbeaten run came to an end.
Ojomoh’s men saw their new Doric Park headquarters breached for the first time as their title ambitions suffered a severe dent.
Praising the efforts of Swanage in keeping the ball in tough conditions, the former Bath and England man said: “Conditions were very tough but it was a massive reality check.
“With all respect to the team, I think there was a bit of complacency. We had beaten them twice (in league and cup) already and perhaps we assumed we just had to turn up.’’
The home side’s previously unblemished record at their new Doric Park home also went as the visitors made the better use of near-unplayable conditions.
Trowbridge kicked off into strong wind and rain, but it was Swanage who were first to score with a successful penalty from Philip Graves.
To their credit both sides tried to play open rugby until the visitors went further ahead with an unconverted try from Jacob Warren.
A miserable half for the home team ended with another successful penalty from Graves.
With conditions in their favour Trowbridge started the second half with a pacy James Macfarlane try and conversion from Lloyd Davis.
Almost from the restart they scored again, with a solo effort from Ashley Chalk following up a Davis kick-ahead, Davis again adding the extras to give the home side the lead for the first time in the game.
Trowbridge started to get on top only to give away another penalty in front of their post, making it easy for Graves to level the scores.
This was followed by a pushover try from Swanage’s Danny Collins and conversion from Graves, who added a further penalty to pile on the pain.
Trowbridge host Bletchley in the Southern Counties Intermediate Cup final tomorrow.
