RUGBY: Dan’s try brightens hosts’ day

Wiltshire Times: Match winner Dan Bright offloads during the narrow victory over Devizes 2nd Match winner Dan Bright offloads during the narrow victory over Devizes 2nd

HEAD coach Dave George admitted the first side to score in Saturday’s Dorset & Wilts One North encounter against Devizes 2nd was always likely to emerge as the winner.

Dan Bright’s solitary second-half try was all that separated the two sides at Ashley Lane as the home side maintained their promotion push.

Bradford have now kept the second teams of Trowbridge and Devizes scoreless in successive weeks and George admitted: “That’s a good effort by the boys because that doesn’t happen too often.’’

Both teams struggled in high winds and lashing rain and George added: “It was a game dominated and dictated by the weather and, to be honest, whoever scored first was going to win.

“The match was played on the second team pitch but, in the first half we played up the slope and against the wind and we fluffed two or three scoring opportunities. We had three attempts at a pushover and didn’t convert.

“The game was played almost entirely in one corner of the pitch and the backline hardly saw the ball. Passing and lineouts were a lottery really.

“It’s the strongest I think I’ve seen it (the wind) up there. A few hardy supporters had come out to watch but I think they were as glad as we were when the referee blew the final whistle.’’
