RUGBY: The dream is alive
TROWBRIDGE captain Matt Howard admits it’s hard not to have “one eye on Twickenham’’ after his side moved to within two victories of a dream date at the home of English rugby.
Howard’s men clinched their place in the South West Intermediate Cup final – the last eight of the RFU Intermediate Cup – with a 34-10 thumping of Bletchley at their Doric Park base in the Southern Counties Vase showpiece on Saturday.
Trowbridge will host the winners of the postponed South West Counties final between Wells and Ivybridge on February 22 where victory would send them into the national last four, a tantalising one win from a Twickenham final.
While that would be the ideal conclusion to their cup heroics, Howard, who jetted off skiing for his stag do on Monday, says his side are already adding historic new chapters to the club’s history.
“I was chatting to a couple of the older members at the club after the game and a few of them were saying that it’s the best achievement in the club’s history because it’s the highest accolade that they have won,’’ said the flanker, whose side scored five tries to see off Bletchley.
“We’ve got lucky with the (cup) draw keeping us at home, but it’s a fantastic moment.
“There are good times at the club and as we keep taking down the games there will be one eye on Twickenham.”
Trowbridge are currently second behind Wells in Southern Counties South and were beaten 28-8 by them in their opening league game of the season.
But should the Somerset side form the opposition in this month’s regional final, Howard believes his side can give a better account of themselves.
“When we played them before it was the start of the season and we were a bit undercooked,’’ he said.
“Should it be them, we will feel we can give them a much better game, especially if we play as we did on Saturday.’’
