ATHLETICS: Danny revs up for Grand Prix tilt

Wiltshire Times: Danny Talbot Danny Talbot

DANNY Talbot will be hoping for a perfect end to his indoor season when he lines up against some of the world’s best 60m men at a sold-out Sainsbury’s British Grand Prix in Birmingham tomorrow, writes KEVIN FAHEY.

The Trowbridge Torna-do’s personal best of 6.62secs and sixth place in the final of the 60m at the British Indoor Championships last weekend earned him an invite for the event and an opportunity to cap a fine indoor campaign that augurs very promisingly for the summer when he will revert back to the 200m.

“I would really love to get to 6.58-59secs next weekend,” said Talbot.

“If I can do that it would mean I would be running around 10.10-15secs for 100m and low 20 seconds for the 200m in the summer.

“Before this winter I was only a 6.7secs man for 60m and running 10.2secs something for 100m so working on my speed and starts has really helped and has given me a lot of confidence for the summer season.”

Talbot reckons he still hasn’t run the perfect 60m, although his personal best in the semi finals at Sheffield wasn’t far off.

“I had a very good start in the semis, but an even better one in the final but I think I tensed up then so couldn’t finish it off, but it was very encouraging,” added Talbot.

“Birmingham should be great because as well as the top British sprinters like James Dasaolu and Dwain Chambers, there will also be some top Americans and Caribbean athletes there.

“There will be two heats of eight and it would be good to get into the final.”

Frome-based Olympian Emily Diamond ran a season’s best of 53.73secs in the semi finals of the 400m before finishing sixth in the final.
