CHIPPENHAM Town new-boy Jake Harris says he’s in for the long haul at Hardenhuish Park.

The 23-year-old former Newport County striker joined the Bluebirds from Conference South Weston-super-Mare last Friday and made his debut as a second half substitute in Saturday’s 2-0 loss at promotion-chasers Chesham United.

Harris, who has had spells at Hereford United and Paulton Rovers and also has Calor League Premier Division experience from a loan spell at Frome Town back in 2011, has been plagued by injury problems this season but insists that he’s come to Chippenham for much more than just a return to full fitness.

“The transfer came from a guy that Mark knows but I think the gaffer knew about me anyway because I played against Swindon Supermarine (for Frome Town) when he was there,” said Harris.

“The whole season hasn't been the best for me really because I’ve picked up a lot of niggly muscle injuries. Just before the Bath game on Boxing Day, I got injured and haven’t really been playing since.

“Weston are doing quite well now, so I wasn’t going to be getting much game time and I decided to come over here and get something together for next season.

“I’m not using the club just to come here, turn up, and then leave at the end of the season – it’s long-term, and I want to try and get a few goals under my belt and then kick on for next season.

“I’ve played at Chippenham a couple of times in pre-season but I don't know too much about it. I don't know too many of the players, apart from Pete Monks, who used to play for Weston.

“I’m not 100 per cent fit – I’d say I'm 80 or 85 but it’s just nice that the gaffer’s given me a chance at the end of the season.”

Bluebirds boss Collier is pleased to have added some extra striking competition for Alan Griffin and Lee Phillips.

He said: “I’ve known Jake from when I was at Supermarine a few years ago and we had a little tip-off that he was available .

“He’s got a great pedigree – he’s played in the FA Trophy final at Wembley for Newport and in the Conference for Hereford.

“He’s been out injured for a little while but he’s certainly one that we wanted to get involved, with a view to next season.

“We want competition for places and he is different to Griffin and Phillips. He’s happy to run in behind people because he’s got a bit of pace so hopefully he’ll be a good addition to the squad.”
