West Wilts men celebrate their promotion after victory over Marlborough last Saturday

THERE were mixed emotions for West Wilts hockey club last weekend as their men’s and women’s first teams suffered contrasting promotion fortunes.

The Warminster club’s men’s side will be plying their trade in the second tier of the Davis Wood League next season after they secured promotion from the Conference North division with a 1-0 victory over Marlborough, pipping Leominster to second place on goal difference.

The women’s first team also had the chance to seal promotion in their final game of the West Clubs Women’s League East Division season.

But first-half goals from Fiona Pridham, Olivia Evans and Karla Cundick weren’t enough to prevent a 4-3 defeat at the hands of champions Swanage & Wareham.

The loss meant they agonisingly missed out on second place by just two points but club chairman Amanda Robson is keen to focus on the positives from the season.

“The men have done really well to get themselves promoted and we’re all really happy for them – I definitely think that it’s been good season for the club,” said Robson, who also plays for the women’s first team.

“With the ladies’ team, I think that we weren’t necessarily looking at the game against Swanage & Wareham but other matches against the sides lower in the table where we dropped points.

“We lost 2-1 to Yeovil & Sherborne (on January 18) and that is one result that you can look at that’s cost us.

“But we finished fifth last season and getting ourselves up to third is an achievement – maybe the ladies can go one better next year?”

West Wilts’ men’s C team had reason to celebrate alongside their firsts counterparts after they clinched the East Central Two title.

But the Wilts 3 women’s side finished bottom of the Wessex Division Two in their league.
