RUGBY: George expecting derby day drama

BRADFORD head coach Dave George is savouring the prospect of a ‘Super Saturday’ finale to an enthralling campaign next weekend.

The Ashley Lane side maintained their position at the head of the standings in emphatic style by thrashing Swindon 2nd 74-0, delivering a potentially crucial boost to their points difference with the title to be decided on April 12.

Bradford and Minety are locked at the summit on 75 points, although Supermarine will take over on points difference if, as expected, they earn a bonus-point win struggling Devizes 2nd in their game in hand this Saturday.

Trowbridge 2nd are also in with a shout, just a point behind and, intriguingly, host Marine on the final day, while Bradford and Minety have tricky away fixtures at Chippenham 2nd and Melksham respectively.

“It’s going to go down to the wire and what makes it more interesting is that all of the teams have tough games,’’ said George, whose side ran in 11 tries against Swindon.

“Whatever happens, it’s been a really good league this season, whether we scrape home on top or not.’’

Dan Bright’s early penalty got Bradford on the board and Swindon were swept away as the hosts signed off their home campaign in style.

Dave Lamplough stormed over for a brace of tries, as did Charlie Holton, who injured an ankle while scoring the second.

Scrum-half Matt Edwards, second row Si Orchard, ex-Colt Tom Arthur, Ed Dawson and Tom Hyde also touched down, while Duncan Burnside also ran in two.

George also revealed that Bradford will have to take their place in Southern Counties South should they clinch the title, despite their original preference for remaining in their current division.

“We’ve been told that whoever wins it will have to go up, so we’ve had to look into preparations for that,’’ he added.
