CHIPPENHAM TOWN: Collier hails Truro triumph
MARK Collier saluted a ‘massive’ result for his Chippenham Town side as they took all three points at Truro City last weekend.
The Bluebirds bounced back to winning ways in Cornwall on Saturday, bringing a run of four successive defeats to an end with a 3-1 triumph at Treyew Road.
Lee Phillips cancelled out Paul Kendall’s opener before Corey King and Alan Griffin struck in the second period for Chippenham.
But Collier’s men finished the afternoon with nine men after goalscorer Phillips was sent off for an alleged headbutt on Kendall and Bryan Smith saw red late on for another off-the-ball incident, with the Bluebirds boss confirming that his club will be appealing the midfielder’s sending off.
“It was a massive result for us and we played particularly well down there too,” said Collier.
“We started very well and although they got a goal when we didn’t clear a set-piece very well, we equalised pretty soon afterwards with a good finish from Lee Phillips at the near post.
“Corey King tucked away a tidy finish after he was slid in by James Guthrie and Griffin scored a good header from a Harley Purnell free-kick. Phillips’ sending off was a shame and it did put a little bit of pressure on us but we defended well and Kent (Kauppinen) in goal made one outstanding save.
“Bryan Smith was sent off for an apparent flailing arm but that’s not in Bryan Smith’s locker – unfortunately, it happened right in front of the dugout and you get people from the bench jumping up to appeal.
“But he was just getting his body in front of the player, as he should do, and we’ll be appealing that sending off.”
Victory saw Chippenham leapfrog this weekend’s opponents Banbury United into 19th position in the Calor League Premier Division table.
Banbury host Biggleswade Town tomorrow night whilst AFC Totton, who are currently 21st, are at home to Redditch United.
