RACHEL Williams is planning to give it her all at this week’s British Gas Swimming Championships as she chases a dream place in the Wales squad for this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old, from Melksham, competed in the 200m freestyle and grappled with the 100m backstroke today before hitting the pool at the Tollscross International Swimming Centre in the 800m and 400m freestyle events on Sunday and next Tuesday respectively.

This year’s British Championships double as the Commonwealth Trials, with the schedule exactly mirroring this summer’s Games and Williams, who won five medals at last year’s British Gas ASA National Age Group Championships, is hoping that she has what it takes to book a return trip to Glasgow in just over three months’ time.

“Training’s been going great. I’ve had a good solid run, so hopefully it all comes together well for this meet,” said Williams, who trains at the University of Bath’s national centre for swimming.

“It’s probably one of the more competitive and solid competitions that I’ll do this season but the tougher it is the more fun it is to do. It’s great to be part of the competition, as well as seeing how everyone else gets on.

"Last year’s medals at the Age Group championships definitely helped me battle on in the tough sessions leading up to this competition but they medals were last season, so now I need to get on the blocks and try and deliver just as well this season.

“Getting to the Commonwealth Games would be the highlight of my swimming career and an absolute dream come true.

“I really hope I can do enough to be selected but it’s going to be extremely tough.”

Corsham star Stephanie Millward and fellow London 2012 Paralympian Aaron Moores are also in action in Glasgow, as well as Holt’s Jessie Foster, Warminster’s Daniella Whiting and Craig Harris, from Corsham ASC.
