NEIL SHARDLOW: A good way to begin
Updated 10:10pm Friday 18th April 2014 in Sport
WE were down at South Wilts on Sunday and won the Marlborough Cup with a good win over Berkshire.
It may be a friendly, but it’s one that we always try to win and, last weekend, we got the season off to a good start.
Berkshire won the Knockout Trophy last season and it was largely the same side that played against us in Sunday’s game.
But in all three aspects of the game – batting, bowling and fielding – we outfought them, and we had a few good performances from some of the players.
Mike Coles (70 in 54 balls) got a good total on Sunday. He got some big scores last year and when he did, so did the team, so I think that he’ll be looking to try and be more consistent with those scores this year.
Joe (Breet) had an admirable spell as captain and even though he was a little bit disappointed to step down, he’s still playing for the side.
Mike had a lot of support from the players and the committee, so it’s nice to have him back as skipper and I think that sometimes, it helps to freshen things up a little bit.
Our batting line-up is looking very strong this year and I think the side is probably slightly stronger than it was last season.
We’ve got one more friendly – against Dorset at South Wilts this Sunday – to get us ready for the first Trophy game against Dorset (on April 27).
We’re looking to try and get people into form in these friendlies and get them back into those good habits.
It looks as though we should have some good weather over the weekend, so everybody should have the chance to play and get themselves prepared for that Dorset match.
Squad v Dorset: Michael Coles (Corsham, captain), Joe Breet (Lechlade), Neil Clark (Potterne), Tom Foley (Corsham), James Hayward (South Wilts), Ed Kilbee (Goatacre), Adam Miles (Cardiff, wicketkeeper), Ashur Morrison (Corsham), Tom Morton (South Wilts), Jake Roberts (Potterne), Steve Warner (South Wilts), Ed Young (Potterne).
