BOWLS: Lucy shines at Melton

Wiltshire Times: Lucy Smith Lucy Smith

TEENAGER Lucy Smith was Wiltshire’s most successful player in this season’s national indoor championships.

The 18-year-old, who plays outdoors for Wootton Bassett, reached the final stages (last 16) in both the ladies indoor singles as well as the ladies pairs championship at Melton & District.

The brilliant young prospect who made her England U25 debut recently against Scotland in the Home International Series again emphasised her tremendous potential in the sport.

Smith had already collected some notable scalps in the singles including England junior and senior international Amy Stanton, the World Indoor Bowls Council World Under 25 champion two years ago, in the inter-area final, and added to that tally at Melton Mowbray.

In the last 16 of the singles Smith, showing no nerves and enjoying herself accounted for the vastly experienced Middlesex player Rhoda Young (Bounds Green) 21-17 sealing victory on the 22nd end with a maximum count of four.

Next up in the quarter-finals against an England triallist skip she produced an awesome display defeating Poole’s Penny Cresswell (Dolphin) 21-13.

But Lucy’s fine run finally came to an end in the semi-finals as she lost 21-11 to experienced England skip Janice Gower (Blackpool Newton Hall).

In the pairs (last 16) with her younger sister Katy, 17, the Smith girls easily accounted for Pat Watson and Daphne Wood (Chigwell) 21-13 but then missed out in the quarter-finals.

They lost to England U 25 international Louise Catchpole and her partner England senior and junior international Rebecca Field, last year’s ladies world indoor champion 26-14.

THE Smiths, father Neil plus Lucy and Katy, competed over Easter in the planetbowls.com Dolphin (Poole) Open Singles.

Neil had a good tournament reaching the final but lost out on the last end of a three end tie-breaker going down 2-1 to Martin Puckett (Moonfleet, Weymouth) 8-3, 4-9, 2-1.

Katy Smith who competes in an England U18 trial this weekend reached the third round at Poole but then lost to Chris Daniels (Bournemouth) 5-8, 7-1, 2-1 while sister Lucy also lost to Daniels in round one on a tie breaker 5-9 7-2 2-0.

Meanwhile Alex Jacobs (North Wilts) went out in round one 5-3, 6-2 to Torquay’s Danny Denison.

The Dolphin Open is the penultimate tournament on the 2013/14 planetbowls.com circuit. The final one the Adur Open in Southwick, West Sussex is scheduled for this weekend.
