CORSHAM’S Steve Bullen thinks his side’s new ‘old heads’ won’t allow his side to get carried away after their season-opening victory over Taunton St Andrews last weekend.

Pete Dennett’s side got their Premier One campaign off to an ideal start with a 60-run triumph at Station Road.

Bullen, who starred with the bat alongside the returning Michael Coles while Jonathan Parker tore through St Andrews with figures of 5-25, hailed a fine start to the season for Corsham.

“We were chuffed to pieces with the result – it was a very good win,” said Bullen.

“We thought that getting 220 on a wettish deck would be a good score, so we were really happy to get to 250. After that, we bowled really well to see it out.

“Michael Coles was great, with Toby Davies as a good foil for him, and Jon Parker got a five-for too. The players we’ve brought in, like Mike and Simon Crampton, have knitted us together as a unit.

“But they’re old heads with a lot of experience too, so they’ll make sure that we take every game as it comes and don’t get ahead of ourselves.”

After being put in to bat first, Coles got Corsham up and running with 55 off 51 balls while Bullen weighed in with a knock of 47.

Ashur Morrison (35), Paul Robbins (22) and skipper Dennett (19) all also contributed to Corsham’s tally.

St Andrews' Luke Poole claimed four wickets while Lloyd Alley took three but their efforts couldn’t prevent the hosts posting 251 as they were skittled in the penultimate over.

The visitors’ James Regan offered up the strongest resistance as he hit 78 while Kevin Parsons made 36 but the five-wicket haul of Parker piled the pressure on St Andrews.

Alley (19) and Martin Jenkins (12) were the only other batsmen to hit double figures for the Somerset outfit while Corsham’s Robbins took 2-27 as St Andrews' ten wickets fell for 191 after 44 overs.

Captain Dennett said: “Seventy per cent of the performance was really good, which is what you expect with people still finding their form at this stage. Because of the weather, we couldn’t get a game in last week so this was effectively our third match.

“If anything, it was good for the new guys to show the talent they can bring to the team. We look strong on paper but at this stage, everybody is talking about who they’ve signed and it takes a month or so for things to even out properly.”
