ADAM Cooksey’s 68 was in vain as Hinton Charterhouse got the better of Bradford on Avon in their first game of the new Wiltshire League season.

An opening stand of 52 Ian Pinchen (25) and James Edwards (27) was followed up by Cooksey, but the last five overs yielded 16 runs and the loss of four wickets with Bradford finishing on 164-9.

In the reply, Richard Thomas claimed a wicket with his first ball, bowling Richard Newport for a duck.

With the returning Mishak Belfon bowling an excellent line, the left-arm spin of Dan Tallentire helped pin Hinton down to 47-3 in the 16th over.

A match-winning partnership of a 123 from Tom Naylor (77 not out) and Chris Antrobus (38 not out) led Hinton to victory.

Also first day winners were Urchfont, who got home by 44 runs against hosts Box.

They were out for 108 in 31.2 overs, Vaughn Williams with 24 as Box’s Rob Styles took 5-41 from nine overs.

Led by the bowling of Joe Dorgan (5-25), Urchfont hit back, dismissing Box for just 64 in under 29 overs.

Urchfont captain Patrick Bromley said: “We knew Box would be a tough outfit after they won every league game last year. Our fielding and bowling attack is really exceptional this year and credit to the team we kept things really tight.’’

Wootton Bassett, tipped for promotion back to the West of England Premier League pyramid this term, chased down 194 to beat Swindon NALGO by three wickets with three-and-a-half overs to spare, Jack Paish steadying the ship after a flurry of wickets in the middle of the innings.

Skipper Darren Beasant said: “We needed more than a run a ball for a while but Jack came in and played superbly. It’s good to win a game, particularly from a tough position, and that will give all the boys confidence.”

Lee Stevens and Ian Lancaster each took three wickets as Bassett slowed down the flying start made by the NALGO top order.

Malmesbury made a winning start to their Division One campaign as they saw off Beanacre & Melksham by eight wickets.

Beanacre totalled 165-8 from their 45 overs but, led by an unbeaten 98 by George Royle, Malmesbury got home inside 39 overs.

Scott McNeill’s efforts with both bat and ball enured Collingbourne suffered a loss against Swindon Civil Service, who scored 169-9 from their 45 overs, Jamie Baden with 64 and McNeill 40 as Ian Kiy took 2-16.

Collingbourne fell 13 runs short in reply, Jon Candler hitting 54 but McNeill and Andy Mildenhall taking four wickets apiece for Service.

Division 2

ROB Anstee’s haul of 5-10 in just 6.3 overs helped Spye Park, relegated from the top flight last term, make a winning start as they defeated Beckington by five wickets.

It took Heytesbury just 20 overs to secure their victory, Ollie Hares finishing unbeaten on 41.

Corsham 3rd were also winners by 52 runs over Avebury. Corsham’s 153-6 proved enough as Luke Curtis took 6-11 in eight overs to dismiss Avebury for 101, despite an unbeaten 40 from Greg Dix.

Division 4

GARETH Unwin also took six wickets, this time for 41 in 11.4 overs as he helped to dismiss Wootton Bassett 3rd for 164, Max Dymoke scoring 75 for Bassett.

Andy Davis’ unbeaten 79 and 62 from Will Wales helped Corsham to a seven-wicket triumph.

Division 5

SKIPPER Danny Hall’s 3-16 helped Bradford on Avon (57 all out) get the better of White Horse (56 all out) in a thrilling low-scoring clash.

White Horse won the toss and fielded, Rufus Lakin and Chris Hotchen both scoring 11 for Bradford.

However, Horse were three wickets down with just four runs on the board, tight bowling and sharp fielding leaving them needing two to win, before Lakin secured the final wicket leaving Bradford as improbable victors.

Ian Sandell scored 61 in Chippenham 3rd’s 90 all out against Spye Park 2nd, for whom Elliott Townsend took 6-18 in 6.2 overs. Mat Cole’s 4-10 then helped to dismiss Spye for 61 in the 36th over.
