NEARLY 200 runners lined up for the Trowbridge 5K, organised by Stampede Sports – race four in the Wiltshire Road Race League, sponsored by Newsquest, the parent company of the Wiltshire Times.

While the event had a sci-fi theme for much of the field, Simon Nott, of Calne Running Club, won in a scorching new personal best of 15 minutes and 15 seconds.

He finished almost 90 seconds ahead of second-placed Gary O’Brien, of Swindon Harriers, and Gary Dunstone, of Chippenham Harriers in third.

Dunstone remains as the leading individual points scorer in the league.

John Crane, of Chippenham Harriers was the first male vet 40, with Robin-Mark Schols, of Avon Valley Runners, taking the male vet 50 prize.

Ruth Barnes, of Avon Valley Runners, defended her title in a time of 18.12.

Denise Grech, of Calne Running Club, was second, with Cordula Hurcum, of Chippenham Harriers next.

In fourth place, Fiona Price, of Avon Valley Runners, claimed the first female vet 40 prize and Aly Sloane, of Salisbury A&RC, the female vet 50 honour.

Securing seven positions in the top ten, Avon Valley Runners took full league points again and sit comfortably at the top of the league’s first division ahead of Chippenham Harriers.

Calne Running Club remain at the top of Division Two, ahead of Bybrook Valley Runners.

The next race in the Wiltshire Road Race League is the Bath Hilly 10 on June 1.

The event was also the fourth in the Wiltshire Junior Race League, sponsored by Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP) and again, Avon Valley monopolised the prizes.

Max Davis, Ollie Weedon and Alexander Tucker claimed the boys’ U13, 15 and 17 prizes respectively, while Ellie Brown and Hannah Gibbs won the girls’ U15 and 17 honours.

Bucking the trend was Poppy Crane, of Chippenham Harriers, who secured the U13 prize. Avon Valley Runners look set to claim the inaugural junior title at the Frome 5K on July 20.

  • AVON Valley Runners’  Peter Bryant won the latest Southwick Country Parkrun on Saturday.

Bryant clocked 17 minutes 52 seconds for his fourth win in eight appearances. Second was 14-time winner Jonathan Kermode in 18.17, with Dominic Beddis third a further four seconds back.

Avon Valley’s Julia Green was first lady home in  12th overall in 20.07.
