GYMNAST Cameron Sinden has his fingers crossed that more international nods are coming his way after he helped Wales win this year’s Celtic Cup.

The 14-year-old, from Chapmanslade, marked his international debut by travelling to Perth, in Scotland, on April 25 and winning a team gold medal as the Welsh squad beat off competition from Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man to claim the cup.

Sinden, who is a pupil at Matravers School in Westbury and trains at the City of Bristol Gymnastics Centre, finished fourth overall individually in the minor boys competition, earning the second-highest score on pommel, but mum Hayley revealed that his preparation for Perth was far from ideal.

“Before going to Perth, he went away skiing with the school and hurt his knee. When he got back, we went on a family holiday to France, so he missed a lot of training,” she said.

“At his club he didn’t really get the chance to go on the floor on the Wednesday before the competition, so he was a bit out of practice with his moves.

“I know that he was happy with how well he did up there but he thinks that it could have been even better. I know that his club are happy to have a male international.

“The age groups are done in groups of two years, so after he turns 15 in January, he’d be competing as an U16, which is a junior, at next year’s cup.

“He’s looking forward to competing for Wales again and we’re waiting to see what comes next.”
