WE GOT the win that we needed to book ourselves a home tie in the quarter-finals of the trophy but I think we know that the performance against Wales last weekend wasn’t as good as it has been in previous games.

Warminster had done a fantastic job of trying to keep things dry for us. I think that they’d borrowed some covers from Corsham and when we got there, there were only really few areas around the ground that were a bit wet.

But we were worried that the wicket might do a bit, just because of all the rain that we’d had in the week. Mike Coles always wants to bat first but we spoke to the groundsman and took the decision to bowl first instead.

Wales actually got off to a tremendous start and I don’t think that we bowled particularly well until the middle overs, where Ed Young, Ashur Morrison and Tom Foley put a bit of pressure on.

We had them at 199-9 and we were quite content with that, but their number ten and eleven put on another 30 or so runs and made it a little bit more difficult for us.

We started our innings well with Adam Miles and Tom Morton and when Mike Coles got in, we thought that him and Tom were going to get us all the way there – Mike got caught and I think if he’d been in for another five overs, they would have gotten us over the line.

But Ashur came in again to chip in with an unbeaten 30 and Tom ended with a tremendous score of 123.

There might have been a little bit of disappointment about the performance but we got the result that we wanted and we’re going to be at home in the quarter-finals against Norfolk.

We played them at Devizes last season and bowled them out for 200 or so but still managed to lose the game – they’re definitely a strong side.

We’ll be playing at Cor-sham, which is a ground we do well at and always back ourselves to score runs at.

The quarter-final will be on June 15 but the week before that, we’ve got a three-day game at Oxfordshire to concentrate on.

It’s the start of a different format and we’ll be looking at what players are doing for their club sides when we pick that squad but getting playing time has been a bit of a problem for players in Wiltshire recently.
