DANNY Talbot is ready for his ‘breakthrough’ year and is hoping a summer to remember kicks into gear with selection for the Commonwealth Games on Monday.

The Trowbridge Tornado handed the England team selectors a timely reminder of his talents as he set a new 100m personal best of 10.14 seconds while finishing second behind fellow London 2012 Olympian Adam Gemili at last weekend’s Bedford International Games.

The 23-year-old also triumphed in his favoured 200m event with a time of 20.61.

Talbot’s 200m time in Bedford was just .16 slower than his all-time best (20.45), but only Olympic and World Championship sprinter James Ellington has gone quicker and the Wiltshire sprinter says he wasn’t even at his best.

Ace Talbot also ran the second-fastest leg at last month’s IAAF World Relay Championships in the Bahamas (8.93) and has his fingers crossed that his sprint career is on the cusp of stepping up to the next level.

“I feel good at the moment and the results I got in Bedford came just after stepping off a plane from America,” said Talbot, whose 100m time puts him equal fourth with Harry Aikines-Aryeetey behind Gemili (10.08), new world indoor 60m champion Richard Kilty (10.12) and Ellington (10.13).

“I’d been out there since April and I was tired and jet-lagged.

“My 100m has really come on and I beat Chris Clarke in the 200m, which was a good result.

“I was a little bit off my PB but I think that I could get even closer to it.

“I got some really good work in with my training group over in America but every time I did a 200m, I was a little bit ill and wasn’t at 100 per cent.

“I want to go into one fresh so that I can run the time that I know I’m capable of because it’s still my main race.

“It’s a great summer this year because there’s already been the World Relays and then there’s the Commonwealth Games (in Glasgow) and the Europeans (Championships) too (in Zurich, from August 12-17).

“I want to compete in all the big competitions for Great Britain or England and hopefully I’ll at least get a spot in the relays for the Commonwealths when the selectors sit down over the weekend.

“It’d be great to get in for an individual event too but I’ll just have to wait and see if I get a phonecall this weekend.”

Talbot added: “I am hoping that this can be a bit of a breakthrough year for me.

“Hopefully it’s time for me to show that I’m ready to challenge for championship medals.”

The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow take place from July 23-August 3 and Talbot’s 10.14 in Bedford saw him achieve England Athletics’ A Standard qualifying time for the 100m.

The A standard time for the 200m is 20.30.
