ATHLETICS: Danny’s getting up to speed in Europe
DANNY Talbot has one senior call-up to celebrate – even though he remains in the dark over his Commonwealth Games fate
The 23-year-old from Hilperton has enjoyed another stellar week, clocking the fastest time by a British man over 200m on Monday before competing at the prestigious Diamond League Bislett Games meeting in Oslo over 100m on Wednesday.
In between, the London 2012 Olympian received the call-up to represent Great Britain over the shorter sprint distance at the European Team Championships in Germany next weekend.
However, he is still waiting to hear if he has got the nod for England at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with the announcement of the team, due on Monday, have been delayed.
“I really don’t know what’s going on (with Commonwealth selection) at the moment,’’ he told the Wiltshire Times.
“There’s obviously been a delay but I’ve got no idea if the team’s even been selected yet.
“First of all we were told to expect an announcement on June 2 and then it was pushed back to June 9.
“It is frustrating because you just want to know if you’ve been selected so that we can plan training and races around it but on the other hand, everyone else is in the same boat. I’ve just got to carry on training well and performing and wait and see what happens.”
On Monday in Prague Talbot raced to victory over 200m in the Memorial Josefa Odložila meeting in a new personal best of 20.36secs which lifted him to number one in the 2014 UK rankings.
The time also moves him to equal 14th – alongside Todd Bennett – in the UK all-time rankings.
“I am really pleased and I know there is more to come in the coming weeks,” he said.
He has also made massive improvement in his 100m by bettering his personal best twice recently the latest being 10.14secs in Bedford.
Talbot had another go at the distance at the Bislett Games after getting a late invite to the race, finishing eighth, clocking 10.31.
“It was a brilliant run by Danny on Monday,” said coach Dan Cossins. “Running 20.3 something feels massively faster than 20.5 and he is now getting into the low 20 seconds.
“Hopefully that will be a huge psychological boost for him and he can go even quicker this season.”
With Talbot ranked only sixth quickest over 100m in the UK this season it may surprise many that he got the nod to take the one spot in the GB team for the European Team Championships.
“We are assuming that sprinters like Chijindu Ujay (9.96secs), Adam Gemili (10.07secs) and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (10.08secs) turned it down to concentrate on the British Championships the following weekend but we didn’t want to turn it down,” added Cossins.
“Opportunities don’t come around like this very often and it is a short career so Danny wanted to race it. We will worry about the trials afterwards.”
