WARMINSTER batsman Tom Weaver reckons it will take time for his new-look side to gel together but is certain that there have been plenty of positive signs so far this summer.

Weaver, previously captain of Trowbridge, made the switch to the Sambourne Road outfit at the start of the season and top-scored as Warminster suffered a five-wicket Wadworth 6X West of England League Glos/Wilts Division defeat at the hands of high-flying Lechlade last weekend.

But Weaver thinks that there were plenty of plus points to take out of Warminster’s display.

“When there are so many changes to a team in a short space of time, it’s always going to take time for everything to come together,” said the Warminster man.

“I came over along with Marcus Brown this summer and Pete Hickerton made the move from Trowbridge not that long ago too. We’ve got a young captain in Tom Davie and I think we’ve got a lot of potential.

“I opened the batting and evaluated that 160 would be a good score. We lost too many early wickets at the top of the order, which is something that we’ve talked about, but Rory Cullinan and David Bateman came in late on and did really well.

“But when you’re up against a player like Joe Breet, you’re always in trouble – he hit 80-odd and didn’t give us a chance to get him out.”

Weather conditions had reduced the match to 38 overs and after winning the toss, Warminster batted first – a decision which must have had Lechlade rubbing their hands with glee as Tom Davie’s men lost a succession of wickets to be 31 for 3 off the first 10 overs.

But a steady 37 from opener Weaver, backed up by the middle order kept Warminster’s tally ticking over, and an eighth-wicket partnership of 63 from wicketkeeper David Bateman and opening bowler Rory Cullinan helped the visitors rack up 158 before they were skittled on the final ball.

Warminster had Lechlade at 43-3 after ten overs but former Wiltshire captain Joe Breet stepped in to put his title-chasing side in the ascendancy as he hit an unbeaten 86 from 104 deliveries.

Paul Godding came in and added an unbeaten 38 late on to see Lechlade to 159-5 early in the 37th over.

Westbury suffered a four-wicket defeat at the hands of county rivals Chippenham.

In a rain-reduced encounter, 2-22 from Chippenham’s George Reed helped restrict Westbury to 124-7 after 25 overs, despite Ben Whiting and Tom Cullen both hitting knocks of 33.

The home side’s Richard Oakley attempted to fight back as he ended with figures of 3-27 but Arran Merryweather (30) helped guide Chippenham to 125-6 in little over 22 overs.

Trowbridge were denied the opportunity to attempt to pull off an upset in the Wiltshire Division last weekend as their clash with league leaders Great Bedwyn was abandoned after just over 40 overs of play.

Visitors Bedwyn had already posted 169-4 before the wet weather put paid to proceedings just three overs into Trowbridge’s innings.

Alex Hart’s men won the toss and opted to bowl first, getting off to a positive start as they claimed the wicket of opener Chris Blundy for just eleven runs.

But Neil Maycock (39 not out), Richard Bosson (37) and Rob Palmer (31) steadied the ship for high-flying Bedwyn, who closed their innings after a rain-reduced 37 overs.

Hart’s men did find time to take to the crease but they found themselves in early trouble before the elements intervened, with Wes Marshall and Mike Reynolds both falling to Bosson for just seven runs.

But the officials called time on proceedings shortly afterwards and the spoils were shared.

Trowbridge, who currently sit sixth in the Wiltshire Division table, go looking to get back to winning ways when they travel to third-placed Burbage & Easton Royal tomorrow.

Elsewhere, Winsley’s home game against second-from-bottom Nationwide House was cancelled before a ball was bowled.

Simon Orchard’s side, who a place below Trowbridge in the table, had tasted victory in their last two outings.

Winsley face a tough trip to Great Bedwyn tomorrow.

Corsham skipper Pete Dennett was delighted his side refused to take their foot off the gas against Bristol last weekend as they notched up a hat-trick of league wins.

Fresh from victories over reigning champions Bath and fellow giants Frocester in their last two outings, the Station Road men made it three from three as they triumphed by 35 runs at Bristol.

Captain Dennett is pleased that Corsham have turned their form around and given their chances of securing a top-four finish a boost.

“I can’t remember a time at Corsham where we’ve won three Premier Division games in a row, so it’s a good achievement,” he said.

“We had a few conversations before the game about the fact that the wins against Bath and Frocester wouldn’t mean anything if we didn’t beat Bristol. We wanted to prove that they weren’t a fluke and I think we did that.

“In the last few weeks we’ve brought some intensity to the way that we prepare for games and I think that it’s helped us.

“We still probably should have scored 250 really and it was a little bit disappointing not to get their tenth wicket but we’re happy with the result.

“Our target is to get into the top four and we’ve got more of a chance of doing that now – if we beat Bridgwater this weekend, it’ll be an interesting league table.”

Wiltshire captain Mike Coles top-scored for Corsham, who were put in to bat first, with a knock of 72 while Ashur Morrison also chipped in with 68 as the visitors posted 230-6 after a rain-reduced 46 overs.

Tom Foley and Paul Robbins then both took two wickets apiece to hamper Bristol’s run chase.

The home side’s William Rudge (44) and Bobby Brown (34 not out) did their best to put runs on the board but Bristol fell short as they only made 195-9.

Will Wales hit 71 as Corsham remained in the hunt in the Premier One 2nd XI division with an 83-run victory at home to Bristol last weekend.

Bristol’s Mike Wilmott took 4-34 but Corsham put a healthy 234-7 on the board, thanks to Wales’ knock and 47 from Tom Shaw.

The home side’s bowling attack then piled the pressure on visitors Bristol, who fell well short as they were dismissed for 151 midway through the 30th over.

In the Glos/Wilts 2nd XI, Trowbridge were unable to put the brakes on unbeaten Potterne as they slipped to a six-wicket defeat.

The home side bowled first after winning the toss and Jamie Hayes (4-18) and Josh Hodder (4-16) put Trowbridge through the wringer.

The visitors’ Craig Brennan (39) was unable to prevent his side being skittled for 111 early in the 26th over.

Paul Clark (43 not out), Jordan Rose (33) and Jamie Hayes (24 not out) then helped Potterne ease to 114-1 and their seventh win of the season in less than 14 overs.

In the Wiltshire Division 2nd XI, Winsley suffered a 15-run defeat at the hands of Nationwide House.
