DANNY Talbot insists his Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix outing has instilled in him the confidence that he is ready to mix it with the big boys.

Talbot was treated to a sneak peak of what is around the corner over the weekend as he took to Hampden Park, the athletics venue for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

And the 23-year-old more than held his own in an illustrious 200m field, which included the likes of Olympic bronze medallist Warren Weir, finishing fifth in 20.44 seconds.

But Talbot wasn’t done there and returned to the newly-laid Hampden Park track the next day to anchor home a Great Britain ‘A’ 4x100m relay team in first in 38.39.

And, while he feels like he missed an opportunity to finish higher up in the 200m, Talbot is adamant he won’t let lightning strike twice next time.

“I’m not used to having such a good bend and it almost shocked me in the 200m,” said Talbot, who hopes to compete throughout the Summer Series – events proudly backed by long-term supporter Sainsbury’s.

“I am a bit annoyed at myself because when I was coming down the home straight I didn’t really believe that I could win which is something as an athlete you never want.

“I think it was just because there was such a strong field and I was just a bit surprised. But I have learnt from that now and I can take confidence forward that I can mix it with these guys and that I can do something at the Commonwealths.

“I now do truly believe I can win races like this. I got my first British title last month and was able to go to Glasgow and follow it up with another good time.

“So hopefully I have all these consistent times in me now and I can come to the Commonwealths and knock a few more tenths off it and run a quick time.”

Talbot will be hoping to double up again when he returns to Hampden Park in a little over a fortnight’s time for the Commonwealth Games.

And after getting in some ideal preparation in the host city of Glasgow Talbot can’t wait to get out there and taste the Scottish atmosphere once again.

“I am really happy and things are going great for me personally,” he added. “I was out there in the 200m and then ran a solid time with the guys in the relay – it is ideal preparation for the relays at the Commonwealths.

“I could well be in the English relay team for the Commonwealth Games and it’s not even an English crowd but the Scottish people were fantastically friendly and supportive to us so I can’t wait to get back.”
