A DRAW was probably a fair result at the end of our game against Devon although I have to say that they had the lion’s share of the cricket.
I don’t think we had an awful lot of luck and that really affected the way we played.
Mike Coles’ injury really did help because he’s a big part of our team and it meant that he couldn’t bat in the second innings.
He was just beginning to get himself in to a bit of a form after hitting a few boundaries before he had to retire and I think we would have been able to get a lot closer to their first innings score had he not had to stop batting.
One of the positives for us was that we did manage to expose their batting line-up a bit, which I was always confident that we’d be able to do, but one disappointment is that first innings score and the fact that we didn’t bat the 90 overs.
We didn’t really manage to put any partnerships together and we only picked up the one bonus point, whereas in the other games we’ve played, we’ve picked up the majority of them.
But fair play to the guys because I asked us to dig deep and find that extra 10 per cent in our second innings and they all did that and more.
The only real significant partnership that we had was between Uzi (Qureshi) and Jayden Levitt but to get 240 for the loss of only four wickets is fantastic.
The gap at the top has been reduced by two points and it’s now 12 but it was important that we didn’t lose the game and a draw is a good result for us.
It keeps us at the top of the Western Division, which is where we want to be, and we know what we have to do in the two games that we have left.
Cheshire are going to come to South Wilts in a couple of weeks looking to beat us. They’re right in the strike zone behind Devon after last weekend’s results and they’re always a strong side.
We’ve also got Shropshire, who have quite a lot of new players this year and are a young side so hopefully we’ll be able to take advantage of that.
There’s no point trying to figure out how many points we’d need at this stage because there are so many permutations, but we know we can’t lose those two games.
