WILTSHIRE riders Holly Woodhead and David Doel both tasted success for Great Britain at the FEI 2014 Young Rider European Championships in Portugal.

The duo helped Great Britain to team bronze while Woodhead, who is based with New Zealand eventer Sir Mark Todd at Badgerstown near Marlborough, partnered DHI Lupison into individual silver at Vale Sabroso.

Woodhead, lying in the silver medal position after the cross country section, knew a single rail down would have pushed her and DHI Lupison off the podium, with both Elizabeth Hayden and Harold Megahey for Ireland having jumped clear.

However, she held her nerve and nearly grabebd the gold medal when German rider Charlotte Hackmeister had two fences in hand, using them both, to win the individual title by just two penalties.

Doel, riding Miss Caruso, owned by both himself and Jane James, led after the dressage on a score of 34.00.

But he was unfortunate to complete his cross country phase in poor conditions.

Those early in the running order completed in fine weather, but heavy rain and a thunder storm forced competition to be halted for an hour before the second half of the field went off in tougher conditions and picked up consderable time penalties.

Doel ended the day in 19th position, a position he held on to in the final standings.

The British team of Sophie Beaty, Doel, Alex Liddle, and Woodhead finished behind champions Ireland and silver medallists Germany.
