FIGHT FANS will see the real Nick Blackwell the next time he steps into the ring – that’s the vow from the Trowbridge ace after he boxed to his first career draw last weekend.

‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell fought out a stalemate against Belarusian veteran Sergey Khomitsky at the Salle des Étoiles hall in Monte Carlo on Saturday night, with the Contender Gym man forced to deal with much more than just the threat of his 40-year-old opponent.

Despite having prepared for an eight-round contest, Blackwell only discovered that he was taking on Khomitsky over six rounds once he entered the ring.

After ending the fight in the ascendancy, the ring announcer initially handed the Trowbridge boxer the win, before embarrassingly retracting to the true result of a majority draw.

Despite the controversy, prospective British middleweight title challenger Blackwell, who turned 24 on Monday, was certain that he was far from his best in front of the television cameras last weekend.

But he is aiming to give a true reflection of his talents when he steps into the ring at the Glow events centre, in Kent, on November 8.

“It was 50 per cent of me. I think that I froze a little bit because I was fighting in Monaco, it was my first fight on Channel 5 and (promoter) Mick Hennessy was there,” said Blackwell, who took his record to 15-3-1.

“I didn’t start quick enough and I didn’t let my shots go early on.

“But I was still hurting him and I still think that I won the fight.

“If it had been eight rounds like it was supposed to be, I would have stopped him.

“At the end, he was talking about wanting more money because he didn’t think I’d be that good.

“I haven’t got long until I’m fighting again, and I’m going to show people a lot more.

“I don’t know who I’ll be fighting yet but it’s not going to be a journeyman.”

Blackwell is no stranger to rubbing shoulders with the country’s best, having previously sparred with the likes of Carl Froch, Matthew Macklin and James DeGale, and is set to step into the training ring with Gennady Golovkin, the world’s top middleweight, after meeting the Kazakh star after his fight in Monaco.

Golovkin, who trains at Big Bear Lake in California, is due to take on Martin Murray, who Blackwell boxed for the British belt back in 2011, in a world title showdown next February.

“He said to me ‘good fight, Nick’ and it was nice that he knew my name.

“I’m going to be part of his training camp for Martin Murray and I can’t wait to learn from him,” said Blackwell.

“He’s the world’s best. His people said to me that Big Bear is 200 miles away from anything else and you’ll just be eating, sleeping and boxing – I said ‘that sounds like heaven to me’.”
