WITH the inclement weather reducing the programme to just nine matches from the scheduled 21, it was a surprise that, in the Premier Division, two matches went ahead.

The match at Christie Miller between AFC Melksham and guests Goatacre CC FC was played out on a quagmire of a pitch that, after just 10 minutes, resembled a mud bath.

The other match that survived the rain was at Sutton Benger, where FC Constitutional got the better of Somerford FC 3-1, on a pitch that fared a lot better and helped the hosts pick up their third win of the season and claim a double over the villagers.

Goals for Mike Burne and Ciaran Lyon, both being their firsts of the season, gave the Cons a 2-0 interval lead.

Jordan Bayliss halved the deficit for Somerford early in the second half and although they hunted down a second it didn’t arrived and the all important next goal went to the Cons’ and Mike Burne who classy finish from a Ben Leslie assist sealed victory for Leighton Joyce’s side.

With both AFC Melksham and Goatacre CC FC missing many players, it would have probably been a benefit for both teams if the match at a very wet Christie Miller had been postponed,

But with the hosts keen to get a fixture played, it somehow beat the elements and Melksham thanks to a 7-0 win would have been the happier of the teams at the final whistle.

Melksham started the brighter of the teams and led on four minutes, Darren Holcombe’s brilliant diving header beyond his own keeper making it 1-0.

An excellent team move resulted in Sean Fordham rifling home from 25 yards to make it 2-0. After that Melksham bossed the game with Dave Macey and Jack Morris running the middle of the park, the former scoring a sweet left footed drive for 3-0 before a second for Fordham sent the home team into the break four goals to the good.

Second-half goals for Tony McElhone and another two for Fordham who also saw a penalty saved made up Melksham’s seven.
