NICK Blackwell considers himself in a ‘win-win situation’ as he prepares to sit down and watch two potential British middleweight title opponents slug it out tomorrow night.

‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell, 24, will be at London’s ExCel Arena to watch Billy Joe Saunders defend the British, Commonwealth and EBU European titles against rivals Chris Eubank Jr, safe in the knowledge that he is next in line to face the victor.

Despite the British Boxing Board of Control sanctioning the Trowbridge man as the mandatory challenger to whoever claims the Lonsdale belt, Blackwell isn’t expecting a rematch with former Olympic competitor Saunders, who he lost to at the ExCel in December 2012.

“I’m looking forward to it. I’m in a win-win situation because I’m going to be fighting the winner. I’ll be over there with Mick (Hennessy, promoter) and hopefully we can try and get a bit of interest in that fight,” said Blackwell.

“I think it’ll be a close fight. You can go on the side of Billy Joe or you can go on the side of Eubank, because he’s the bigger puncher and with his size, he’s a proper middleweight. But I think Billy Joe will out-box him.

“If Billy Joe wins it, he’s already told me that he’ll vacate the belts and go on to world titles, so I’d probably end up fighting John Ryder, who I don’t think is as good as Eubank.

“If Eubank wins, he’ll probably want to try and defend the British title to win it outright. I’d love to have that fight.

“I sparred with him a little while ago and beat him up a bit. His trainer Ronnie Davis said ‘the only way you two will fight is if it’s for big money or a big title’ but if he wins the British, he’ll have to fight me.”

After claiming his 16th pro win against Nathan King in Kent earlier this month, Blackwell was set to box in Germany on December 6 on the undercard of Juergen Braehmer’s WBA light-heavyweight title clash with Pawel Glazewski but the Trowbridge ace admits that outing could be in doubt.

“One of the guys at the top of the bill has pulled out, so I think that it might not be happening now. That’s not 100 per cent though,” said Blackwell.

“David Price is still fighting out there but Channel 5 aren’t as interested in covering it, unless I went and had a world title eliminator. That could end up being against someone right at the top of the rankings.

“With just two weeks notice, I don’t think I’d want to go and fight someone like Felix Sturm. I’d need an eight or ten-week training camp for that.

“I’ll speak to Mick on Saturday about it but I’d prefer to be British middleweight champion first.”
