MELKSHAM Town Reserves manager Steve Burns is not letting Saturday’s 3-3 draw at struggling Marlborough Town affect his title aspirations.

Second-placed Ludgershall Sports made the most of leaders Town’s slip up and closed the gap at the top to a single point with a 2-1 success at Wootton Bassett Town Dev.

Burns was unable to attend Melksham’s trip to Marlborough and revealed he had still expected his side to claim a better result despite his absence.

“It’s difficult for me to comment but to concede three goals when we had only conceded eight others all season is disappointing,” said Burns.

“Maybe this is a bit of a reality check but what I would say is that in the majority of games this season we have been the better side.

“I’m still delighted with where we are in the league. We’re at the top and you have to aim high so now I want us to try to go on and win it.”

Town will not get a chance to rectify that result as they are without a fixture this weekend.

“We could do with a game to be honest as you never know what the weather has planned,” added Burns.

“The more games we have now the better as we don’t want to be affected by a backlog after Christmas.”

Elsewhere, Devizes Town Reserves were beaten 5-2 on their trip to Supermarine Sports and there was also disappointment for Wilts Calne Town as they were thrashed 5-1 at Wroughton. Vale of Pewsey were 3-2 winners at home to Sarum Youth.

FC Chippenham Youth reached the next round of the Corsham Print Senior Knockout Cup with a 3-2 victory at Shrewton United.
