A DISAPPOINTING December continued for Warminster Town joint manager Derek Graham as his side crashed out of the Wiltshire Senior Cup.

Amesbury Town, who are sitting third in the Sydenhams Wessex League, were the visitors and despite taking the lead through an Alex Lapham goal, the home side made their exit.

Warminster had plenty of chances to put the game out of reach in the first half and were punished moments after the restart for not taking them before the visitors took control of the contest and took the lead midway through the second half.

“The first half we played superbly and deservedly took the lead through Alex Lapham and we actually should have scored two or three more, we were totally in control,” said Graham.

“We went in at half time no worries at all and we just had to keep doing what we were doing because they couldn’t get out of their half.

“The last thing we said was we are very prone to giving a goal away in the first four or five minutes and what happened straight from the kick-off they scored.

“They then had the ascendency and we just didn’t play for about 20 minutes.

“We then conceded the second and we came back at them, but we missed a couple of sitters.

“Then we just threw caution to the wind and we were pressing and pressing but just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net.

“I expected them to beat us because they are flying in the Wessex League but that didn’t prove to be the case and we should have got something out of it.”

It was Warminster’s third defeat in the month of December, having not won since their 5-0 victory against Keynsham at the end of November.

Graham will now be looking to next weekend’s league match against Westbury United to ensure they don’t end the month without a point.

“It has just all sort of gone wrong,” he added.

“Unfortunately a lot of that has been down to losing the keeper. We have been chopping and changing.

“We looked at their record and I think they have been scoring three and a half goals a game and to be fair we had them on the back foot.

“We should really have gone in three or four up and the game would have been over.

“If you don’t do that you don’t win games because you can’t do it for 90 minutes unless they are a poor side and they are not a poor side.”
