TROWBRIDGE head coach Steve Ojomoh praised his side’s character as they dug deep to secure an impressive South West One East win at home to Swindon at Doric Park.

The hosts took the lead through Shia Bonnick after 20 minutes, with Lloyd Davis getting the conversion.

Swindon conceded a penalty straight from the re-start to give Davis the chance to further extend the lead with the wind in the home sides favour.

Adam Westall pulled a try back for the visitors but tries from James Davies and Dan Smith, with Dan Phillips in the sin-bin, gave Trowbridge a 20 point advantage going into the break.

Swindon started the second half strongly with Connal Knott and Adam Dobie both going over the whitewash to pull the score back to within five points.

But with 10 minutes to go Davis was successful with a penalty to ease the tension before Davies went over for his second of the afternoon to wrap up the result.

“It was a thoroughly entertaining game,” said Ojomoh.

“You had win, you had rain, you had snow, you had hail, we had everything and it was gripping.

“You know when you play at Doric Park the wind is always going to be a factor and we had the wind first half.

“We finished the half 17 points in front but with the wind the key thing at the start of the second half was to score first and unfortunately that didn’t happen, if anything we shipped the first ten points.

“It took a lot of guts and character, and teams of the past would have caved in after a few quick scores.

“There was a lot of grit and character and it is probably one of the most impressive wins we have had all season.

“It is learning how to win those tight games.

“We know we’re a hard team to beat at home but it is taking those moments and it is all an experience.

“Not often do I feel for the opposition but you felt given the nature of the game they should have come away with something, they played their part and it would have been hard for them to swallow.

“It is now about getting positive momentum and building with next season in mind and making sure we have players exposed to this level of rugby.”
