CLARRIE Dunbar stage their second Open Singles Tournament this weekend, writes DAVE EATON.

The event has attracted a top class field to the Standerwick club with £1,000 going to the winner and £500 to the runner-up.

It is the second planetbowls.com tournament to be held at Dunbar, forming one of 29 open singles events on the nationwide planetbowls circuit, with points from the tournament contributing to the national ranking list.

The top 32 ranked players then compete in the Grand Final tournament for the overall planetbowls title at Boston in October.

There is also prize money totalling £2250, thanks to sponsorship from Drake Pride Bowls and Jumping Jacks Bowls Shop, located at Clarrie.

Nine previous planetbowls open champions will be competing for the 2015 Clarrie Open title.

These include Shaun Jones (Malvern Hills), the 2014 grand final winner and 2013 Barwell Open Champion, Scott Edwards (Adur, Hove), last year’s Adur Open Champion and 2013 grand final runner-up and Clarrie’s own Andy Colebrooke, the 2014 Clarrie and Westlecot Open champion.

Bournemouth’s Nick Revell, James Bruder (Wey Valley) Danny Denison (Torquay United); Clarrie’s Keith Bailey, Graeme MacDougal (East of Scotland) and Brian Lees (Welford-on-Avon) will also compete.

Two-time national men's Champion of Champions singles champion, Graham Shadwell (Clarrie Dunbar) will be looking to win his home club title after finishing runner-up last year losing in the final to clubmate Colebrooke.

While other players to keep an eye on are: England junior international Ryan Atkins (Malvern Hills), the current national U25 champion and 2014 men’s national champion of champions champion; Mark Burdett (City of Coventry), Ben Paulley (Bournemouth), Gary Fountain (Dolphin) as well local players Christie Miller’s Andy Moore and Wayne Snook.

The current highest ranking planetbowls player competing at Clarrie will be Denison, who is ranked at two in the planet list as well as being ranked world number 20.

Denison will have a bounty hanging over his head of £50, which will be rewarded to the player that knocks him out of the tournament. The first opportunity of the Bounty falls to Welford on Avon’s Martin Timms who has been drawn against him in the first round.

The tournament is played in a sets format, each match consisting of two sets of seven ends, with a three end tiebreaker being played in the event of a draw.

This year 80 players will be competing for the title over the three days.

Friday’s session (starting at 6.30pm) features local players in three sessions, tomorrow sees 10 sessions being played and seven on Sunday plus the final that is scheduled to take place at 7pm.

Admission is free, spectators are welcome with refreshments on sale and a bar in operation.
