CORSHAM Town ensured there was no hangover from their crushing 6-1 defeat at Warminster Town last Saturday by getting back to winning ways with a 4-2 success over another Wiltshire rival, Westbury United, in midweek.

The weekend match was overshadowed by a horrendous injury to Warminster’s Mark Breffit, who suffered two broken bones in his leg.

That forced the game to be stopped for more than an hour and Corsham were shell-shocked once play resumed with 12 minutes to go, conceding three more goals.

But they put that behind them on their return to the Southbank and got the better of a six-goal thriller against United.

Boss Trevor Rawlings said: “That was what we needed to do. Saturday was just one of those days and I didn’t think it would have an effect on Wednesday.

“We were heavily depleted and went there with one of the weakest squads we’ve had all season, and there was a reason the scoreline finished like it did.

“I knew that wouldn’t happen again and I was confident the boys wouldn’t be affected by it.”

Kieron Gleed was the hero for Corsham, firing a superb hat-trick after Sam Ockwell had opened the scoring for the home side.

However, it was far from plain sailing for Corsham as the never-say-die attitude instilled in Westbury by new boss Shaun Gardiner caused the home side plenty of headaches before the final whistle.

Rawlings added: “In the first half we were in control. We went out and had chances and had a shot cleared off the line in the first minute.

“We got ourselves in front but then let in a bit of a sloppy equaliser, which was disappointing.

“The lads responded really well and we were really comfortable and were able to go 3-1 up at half-time.

“In the second half we did our usual thing of coming out and starting slowly and they managed to get a second goal with an unmarked header at a corner.

“They didn’t really open us up at all and I can’t remember our keeper having to make a save but from set-pieces they caused us problems and ended up with two goals.

“We had a bit of a wobble there but we managed to steady ourselves and get the fourth goal and I think by the end we deserved to get the win.”

Corsham are at home to Cheddar on Saturday, while Westbury entertain Cribbs.
