SIX straight victories for AFC Melksham had seen them move into second spot in the S.K. Fruits Ltd sponsored Chippenham & District Sunday League Premier Division standings so their meeting with leaders Prestige Bodyworks on Thursday evening had taken on a greater importance for Prestige’s title hopes.

Tyrone Prades' table toppers were the last team to beat Mike Rogers' side when they won 2-0 at the end of January and they would have been favourites to complete a double over their guests at Stanley Park However things didn’t go their way as Melksham made it seven wins on the bounce courtesy of a 2-1 win.

Eathan Cox gave Melksham a first-half lead and James Darks second-half goal ensured victory after Matt Hopper had got Prestige back on level terms.

The result was a setback to Prestige’s title hopes but with Corsham Wildcats losing out in their first of two encounters with Westbury Rangers on the night they remain favourites in the race to become champions.

Westbury Rangers and Corsham CC Wildcats played back to back games at Meadow Lane.

The first saw Shaun Gardiner’s Westbury side upset the odds as they claimed a 2-1 success which owed much to the heroics of keeper Marco Viola, who was superb as he produced a series of miracle saves to keep out both Sam Jordan and Gary Higdon.

Viola was eventually beaten by Tom Jones whose goal gave the Wildcats a half-time lead but after the break goals from Lee Mounty and Mark Young earned Westbury an unlikely win.

The second match saw a reversal in the scoreline with the Wildcats winning 2-1. Leigh Rogers and Gary Higdon finding the net for the Wildcats with Gary Tugwell replying for Westbury who complete their campaign this Sunday when they visit AFC Melksham.
