OLYMPIC champion Ed McKeever believes his build-up to this summer's Canoe Sprint World Championships is on course after registering a bronze medal at the latest World Cup event in Denmark at the weekend.

McKeever was just 0.328 of a second behind K1 200m winner Peter Menning, of Sweden, in Copenhagen with Canada’s Mark De Jonge in second position.

“Last weekend in Duisburg (second World Cup event) I wasn’t that far off in terms of time so it’s good to be back on the podium,” McKeever told gbcanoeing.org.uk.

“I’m happy with how things are progressing. It’s been a slower start to the year as we build through to the World Championships but I’m confident going forwards.

McKeever missed the 2014 World Cup season because of a virus but won silver at the European Championships and bronze iat last year's World Championships.

He heads the British contingent heading to the European Games in Baku later this week, with the World Championships, in Milan, the qualifying event for the 2016 Rio Olympics also looming.

“I had a solid winter’s training under my belt which puts me in good stead for the next two years. I can definitely improve on my races and get a lot faster,'' he added.

“I’m very happy going forwards and looking forward to racing in Baku in two weeks.”
