AN APPROPRIATE span of green space will be the key to green-lighting Westbury United’s plans to move to a new home.

This week, chairman Matt Bright lifted the lid on his club’s plans to move away from their home at Meadow Lane, where United have plied their trade since the 1930s, and the White Horse men are appealing to the local community to help find them a site for a new ground.

Westbury plan to finance their move by selling their Meadow Lane site and after months of groundwork, the Toolstation League club are primed to put ‘Project Green Light’ into action, if they can identify a suitable piece of land in the local area to build a new first team pitch and surrounding stands.

United are also aiming to bolster their links with Westbury Youth FC, who are currently primarily based at Redland Lane, and Bright, who is also chairman of the youth outfit, wants the prospective new facility to also be able to serve the town’s blossoming juvenile scene.

“There’s been a bit of a gap between the adult club and the youth club, and when I took over as Westbury United chairman in November last year, that was something that I wanted to right,” said Bright.

“The youth section has grown significantly and we’ve got something like 400 youngsters involved now, so we want somewhere for them too because their facilities are creaking.

“This isn’t something whimsical that’s might happen – it’s going to happen.

“There have been lots of rumours about it and it’s been going on since well before I was chairman.

“We’ve spoken to a developer, we’ve spoken to Wiltshire Council and we’ve also spoken to the FA about it because we’re a Charter Standard club.

“The good thing for us is that we own Meadow Lane, so we can sell that to fund a new ground.

“We just need to find a piece of green space that can be our site.

“We’ve named this ‘Project Green Light’ because we play in green and it’s bright because we’re thinking about the future.”

Westbury Youth held their 22nd tournament at Matravers School last weekend.

More than 170 teams took part in boys and girls age groups ranging from U9 to U18.
