CORSHAM team manager Ben Da Costa thinks that captain Ashur Morrison has his side heading in the right direction.

A captain’s innings from Morrison – his maiden first-team ton – helped Corsham see off Bridgwater by 97 runs at Station Road last weekend and notch up their sixth victory of the season in Premier One.

After a number of selection issues earlier in the campaign, Da Costa reckons that Corsham are back on an even keel and that Morrison deserves credit for steadying the ship.

“We did really well at the start of the season and were at the top for a couple of weeks. We’d brought in people like Nick Harrison, who’s an old Corsham lad, and things were looking good,” said Da Costa.

“But we started to have a few problems with availability and that’s when we started to get mixed results.

“Nick was injured for a while – he should hopefully be back this weekend – Paul Robbins’ availability fluctuated, and Henry Langford left because he found the travelling was too much. When you’ve lost a main spinner and an opening batsman, it’s difficult.

“But credit to Ashur because he’s brought the whole team together. He made sure that people were able to come to training and things look like they’ve improved.

“I think there’s a lot of potential still left in the team this season.” Corsham won the toss and elected to bat first, with opener Steve Bullen setting the tone as he set about constructing an unbeaten knock of 88.

Dwain Fielding fell to Bridgwater’s George Bartlett for 19 but that brought in skipper Morrison, who took matters into his own hands and hit 130 not out from 129 deliveries.

Morrison smacked 11 fours and seven sixes as he drove his team into the ascendancy, with Corsham posting 254 for the loss of just a single wicket.

Fielding may have hit out early with the bat but he proved chief antagonist with the ball as he ripped through the Bridgwater order, ending the afternoon with fine figures of 5-16.

Mitchell Windsor (62) offered up the most resistance for the visitors whilst Steve Davis made 35, but the pressure told as Morrison also chipped in with a pair of wickets, with Bridgwater were eventually dismissed for 157 early in the 39th over.

Corsham face a tough test next weekend as they make the trip to second-placed title-chasers Bath.
