WOOTTON Bassett will be well represented in the men’s section of the national championships that begin this weekend at Royal Leamington Spa.

They had already qualified for Leamington in five men’s events - singles, junior singles, senior singles, triples and fours - now that figure of representation has been increased to seven.

Dave Snell, who had already booked his place to defend his senior (O55s) singles title, has now qualified in the senior pairs with Mel Biggs (Westlecot), with whom he won the title two years ago.

Kyle Anderson, who had booked places at Leamington in the junior (U25s) singles and fours, also qualified with his father John (Westlecot) in the family pairs competition.

Snell, together with Biggs, sealed their place in the last 32 of the senior pairs with a 23-10 victory over Holt’s Rodney Summers and Kevin Oliver on Monday evening.

The Andersons had a tough passage through to the last eight at Leamington.

They beat Westlecot’s Gary and Mike Jackson 21-20 on an extra end and then Westlecot’s Craig and Bassett’s Gary Morphet 21-20 on a second extra end.

They followed these two tight games with a 24-16 victory over Leamington 2013 family pairs beaten finalists Craig and Graham Hatherall (Westlecot).

A 26-10 win over Holt’s Justin Davis and his father booked them a place in the inter area final against Dan and Andrew Smith (Alexandra, Portsmouth) at Thatcham which the Anderson’s won 19-7.

They now qualify for the quarter-finals at Leamington on Saturday (2pm) and face the holders from Northumberland Les and Chris Yeomans.

Although this will be the first of three final stages for Kyle, for his father John it is the first time ever he has reached the final stages in the national championships at either Worthing or Leamington.

THE four areas in the 2015 Wiltshire Men’s Four Rink League competition are nearing completion.

Area A in the north of the county has been decided with Highworth first and Swindon West End taking second spot.

Westlecot cannot be caught in Area B but it is a straight fight between Wootton Bassett and Chippenham Town for second place. Town need 35 out of a possible 42 points to pip Bassett for a play-offs place.

Holt are the runaway winners in Area C but it is a tight fight between Spencer Moulton, Avon and Spencer Melksham for the runners-up spot and a place in the play-offs.

As usual in the south of the county Amesbury are the winners with Salisbury second.

As it stands the quarter-final draw will be: Highworth v Spencer Moulton, Avon or Spencer Melksham; Swindon West End v Holt; Westlecot v Salisbury; Wootton Bassett or Chippenham Town v Amesbury.

Matches in the quarter-finals this year will be played on a two home rink and two away rinks basis with teams to agree dates and can be played as soon as final draw has been decided.

The semi-finals are set to be played on neutral greens on Sunday, August 30 with the final the following weekend at Devizes.
