PEWSEY consolidated their position at the top of the Dorset & Wilts 2 North table with a bonus-point 28-10 win away at Westbury.

However, Westbury were actually first on the scoreboard thanks to a Simon Higgins penalty.

Their joy was short lived, though, as Westbury’s clearance kick following the restart was charged down and Pewsey number eight Phil Vallis got his hands on the ball to dot down, converted by Tom Taylor.

Pewsey then had their second score just five minutes later as the visitors made the most of some poor tackling, running through virtually unopposed before James Haynes finished the job, with Taylor adding the extras.

After that setback Westbury were able to tighten their game and became more competitive without any reward on the scoreboard.

The home side did suffer a lapse in concentration on the half-hour and a quick Pewsey tap penalty allowed prop Dave Sharp to claim their third try, with Haynes’ kick making it 21-3 at half-time.

The half did end on a sour note, however, as Pewsey scrum-half Taylor was engulfed by a collapsed ruck which resulted in him suffering a broken collarbone.

The second half was a much more even affair, although Pewsey continued to look the more threatening and lock James Campbell crossed for their bonus point try, converted by Haynes.

Westbury were able to pull a score back before the final whistle, with replacement hooker Jamie Comley driving across the whitewash from a catch-and-drive at a lineout, with Higgins adding the extras.

The two sides will go at it again on Saturday as the draw for the Senior Plate semi-finals has handed Westbury at trip to Pewsey’s Wilcot Road.
