WESTBURY United were left to rue a host of missed chances as they were knocked out of the Les Phillips Cup last weekend.

James Goddard’s side conceded twice inside the opening 10 minutes at home to Almondsbury UWE but were unable to find a way back into their first round tie, eventually losing 3-1.

Almondsbury got off to a quick start at Meadow Lane as Sam Rees ran onto Jordan Davies’ long ball and lobbed Callum Hotine to open the scoring with just eight minutes on the clock and it was soon 2-0 as Joe Black’s set piece was headed in by Nicholas Gray.

Westbury got themselves straight back into the tie in just the 11th minute when Dan Moore received the ball on the halfway line and after advancing several yards, he lobbed a long-range effort into the net to reduce the deficit in spectacular style.

United should have equalised before half time – Moore had an attempt cleared off the line, Marc Scammell clipped the crossbar and Josh Ferguson was denied by visiting keeper Ryan Scott, as well as shooting wide.

The second half got off to a scrappy start, with possession wasted by both sides, however the hosts got going and a sustained spell of pressure and flowing moves saw Ferguson twice, Levi Wood and James Hounsell attempt to draw their team level.

However, the equaliser never came and it was Almondsbury who made their progress safe when Ryan Gourley finished powerfully from close range in the 71st minute.

Almondsbury goalie Scott did well to parry Jordan Cain’s late shot as Westbury pressed right until the end.

Goddard's men return to league action on Saturday at home to Wells City.
