CHIPPENHAM Town captain Greg Tindle sees no reason why the Bluebirds should clip their wings as they continue to fly high in the Southern League Premier Division.

Mark Collier’s men have looked in serene form all season and briefly hit the top of the table with a 4-1 win over King’s Lynn Town on Saturday before Poole Town returned there with a midweek win over Weymouth .

With 15 matches still to play, Chippenham face a tough battle ahead but Tindle believes they have what it takes to go all the way.

“I’m a little bit surprised with where we are but there is a lot of belief in the squad,” said Tindle.

“There are young lads mixed with experience. The young lads don’t fear anything and the older ones know what to do, and the gaffer has got us playing in a way that suits us.

“I don’t know if we have taken a few teams by surprise as the last few years have been a bit lean for us and we haven’t been up where we’d want to be. I’m not sure they were expecting us to be where we are, so maybe they have taken us a bit lightly.

“If you’d asked anyone here at the start of the year I’m sure they’d have snapped your hand off for a place in the play-offs.

“People have got games in hand but they have still got to win those games so I’m looking to win it.

“There’s no reason why we can’t. We have got a good young squad and it’s certainly something we are capable of.”

The last Chippenham team that had this good a chance of promotion was in the 2009-10 season, a side that Tindle is just one of two survivors of.

The Bluebirds finished third as Farnborough were crowned champions before going down to an agonising 2-1 defeat to Nuneaton Town in the play-off final.

Tindle added: “It’s a bit different now to back then. We were a physical side whereas now we are more of a football side.

“I think the overall league has changed too as we had some real big hitters. Teams like Farnborough and Nuneaton threw money at it, and the teams who you expected to go up went up.

“Now it’s much more wide open and I think anyone down to about 10th has got a chance of making the play-offs.

“It was a great occasion playing in the play-off final then, so it’d be great if we can at least match that this year.”
