DAVE Terry praised the commitment from Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserves players after they secured their place in the last eight of the Wiltshire League’s Fountain Trophies Senior KO Cup on Saturday.

In the only game to survive the elements, Bassett booked a quarter final against local rivals Wroughton as goals from Carl Shepherd and Scott Walduck edged them past Wilts Calne Town 2-1 at the Gerrard Buxton Sports Ground.

Shepherd struck early to put Bassett into the ascendancy in the first half, with Walduck securing the result in the second half in what was only Bassett’s second match since the start of December.

Joint-boss Terry saluted his side for adapting to tricky conditions to get their result and also for their resilience in what has been a disjointed period of the season.

“The wind didn’t help us that much in the first half because there were a lot of balls that we were over-hitting,’’ he said.

“We had a chat at half time and urged them to keep the ball down and, as we haven’t played much in the last few weeks, we did pretty well.

“We had a lot of young lads on the bench and we’ve just started getting results together a bit.

“We’d like to make progress in the cup if we can.

“The consistency has not been there (because of the weather).

“In the last couple of weeks we’ve had games called off at the last minute which is difficult when you have prepared to play football.

“But we had a good result against Malmesbury (before Christmas) and we should have got something out of (leaders) Trowbridge (last month, they lost 2-1) and the commitment and work rate has been first class.’’
