WESTBURY United bounced back immediately from their defeat to Chard Town last weekend with a 2-0 win over Wiltshire rivals Corsham Town on Wednesday night.

A fifth-minute goal from Max Westlake was enough to send James Goddard’s side back from Chard empty handed.

However against Corsham, Matt Jones tapped home a rebound and Sean Brereton finished off a good run with a fine strike to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at the break, a scoreline which remained until the final whistle to hand Goddard’s men their third victory of the campaign.

“It was a really good performance,” said Goddard, who was pleased to see his defence keep a clean sheet after conceding nine in one game earlier in the season.

“It is always going to be a tough game going to Corsham, they are usually a very good side but we played really well in the first half to get that lead.

“I think we started really well, we kept hold of the ball for the first 10 minutes and played our way into the game and then with the players we have got going forward, we are always a threat.

“We had to hold on come the end of the second half where they were throwing a lot of pressure at us but we were really solid.

“We said at half-time that we knew they were going to give it a good go, they are too good of a side to go out quietly and they really tested us.

“Defensively, we were solid and the lads who came off the bench did well too, “The only result where we have been the worst team this year was against Hengrove, when we were very comfortably beaten, but even against Chard at the weekend, we should have won the game – we missed a penalty and the situation with the referee going off injured was not ideal.

“Nine times out of 10 we would have won that game so we have started the season very well.”

It was a better result for Nigel Tripp’s Corsham side last Saturday as goals from Callum Elms and Adam Shipman secured a 2-1 victory at Keynsham Town.

Meanwhile, Warminster Town, who were well beaten 4-0 by Cheddar at the weekend, suffered late heartache as they fell to a 3-2 defeat at home to Wincanton Town.

A Sam Clift penalty, after Louis Sparey was felled in the box, gave the hosts a 20th-minute lead before the visitors were back on level terms two minutes later through a deflected goal.

Town were trailing at the break when they failed to clear a cross and the loose ball was tucked home, although Craig Sheppard made it 2-2 early in the second half.

Town were unable to hold on for the point, though, as they suffered their fourth defeat of the term.
