MELKSHAM Town were able to convert their excellent league form into the FA Vase this weekend as they breezed past Swindon New College 4-0.

Darren Perrin’s team, who are the country’s highest scorers in the fifth tier with 44 in their first 12 games, currently sit top of the Toolstation Premier Division.

Their 4-0 win over Hellenic League College last Friday was Melksham’s sixth win in a row, part of an even longer run of form that has seen two defeats in 13 games.

Despite the victory though, manager Perrin felt his side could have done plenty more in the game.

“The performance was okay, but the New College goalkeeper produced arguably the best performance I have seen this year – he was absolutely fantastic,” said the Melksham manager.

“If it wasn’t for him then it could have been any score really. They were a very young side and I’m sure they would have gained experience from it.

“We could have improved our finishing. It was woeful. It was just attack after attack and some of our finishing was not of the standard it has been recently.’’ Perrin admitted he would love a cup run as it provides an opportunity to earn some money for the club.

“At the end of the day, it is a cup match. It is all about progressing and the players did that. The Vase is very important.

“You can get into the national headlines, get good publicity and prize money for little clubs, and clubs like ourselves; we need every penny we possibly can.

“So we would certainly like a run in the Vase. On paper, we have a tough draw (Sydenhams League side Bournemouth away) in the next round but it’s a game I feel we can win.”

Westbury United were unable to join them in the next round as they were narrowly beaten 2-1 at home by Cribbs, Otis Young with the goal for the home side.

In the Toolstation League First Division, a Francois Allen double allowed Warminster to claim a 2-0 away win at Welton Rovers.
