CORSHAM Town manager Nigel Tripp took comfort from the result if not the performance during his side’s 4-2 Toolstation First Division success away at Almondsbury UWE on Saturday.

The Southbank side had failed to register a win in their last seven league fixtures, although five of those had ended in draws.

Tripp conceded that his team were not fully at the races in their first game since Boxing Day and they had to overturn an early deficit in the second half.

Zac Costello put Corsham in front but Almondsbury were level at the break and actually spurned the chance to take the lead when they missed a penalty.

The home side were able to get their noses in front soon after the restart but goals from Callum Elms, debutant Aaron Masson and Dan Heavey saw Corsham come from behind to claim all three points.

“It was a good win but the performance wasn’t very good, if I am honest. We got a bit lucky and we have played better and lost this season,” said Tripp.

“Everyone worked hard but it was just one of those where we didn’t quite click, which was probably down to being flat after the break.

“Fair play to the players though, they have loads of character and that’s three games in a row now that we haven’t lost. We are hopefully going in the right direction.

“It was a new side at the start of the season and the first thing we wanted to do was to be hard to beat. We have done that and now the next thing is turning those draws into wins and hopefully this is the start of that.

“We have a lot of talented young lads so there is plenty for us to be upbeat about.”

Corsham followed up their weekend win with a 3-1 defeat away at Oldland Abbotonians on Wednesday night - Ben Pring scoring.

Elsewhere last Saturday, Warminster Town shared a 1-1 draw away at county rivals Chippenham Park, while it was a day to forget for Westbury United in another all-Wiltshire affair as they were thumped 4-0 at Calne Town.

Corsham host high-flying Hengrove Athletic this weekend, Westbury are at home Park and Warminster entertain Malmesbury Victoria.
