A RECORD points tally for the Southern League Premier Division would be the icing on the cake of a ‘momentous’ season for Chippenham Town boss Mark Collier.

The Bluebirds clinched the title on Good Friday without kicking a ball as the only team who could catch them at the summit, Leamington, fell to a 2-0 defeat to Biggleswade Town.

That sparked rapturous celebrations at Hardenhuish Park the next day, despite Chippenham losing the game 2-1 to St Neots Town, as Collier’s side soaked in the plaudits following a hard-fought season.

However, the league title is not enough for Collier, who would savour clinching the league record points tally to go alongside the trophy they will be receiving on Saturday.

“It would round it off nicely,” said Collier, whose side can eclipse Hemel Hempstead Town’s 2013/14 season points haul of 102 points when they play St Ives Town on Saturday at home, having reached the 100-point mark with a 1-0 win over Frome Town on Easter Monday.

“I am sure that St Ives will have something to say about it but we’re going to be the home team, hopefully there will be another good crowd there and it will be a celebratory time, what with getting the trophy.

“If we can get that points tally as well, that would be fantastic and credit to the players who have done so well.”

Despite only learning of their fate on Friday, Collier admits he could not resist already looking ahead to planning for next season in the National League’s regional division, the highest level the club have ever reached, but concedes he needs to soak in this feeling of success first.

“Maybe it is too early but I have started thinking about it,” added Collier, who believes his side are in a good position for an assault on the next level.

“I haven’t had a conversation with the chairman, that will happen over the next couple of weeks.

“We’re going to get next week out of the way and then we’ll start making sure we have some plans in place for next season.

“It’s paramount that everybody, myself included, enjoy the moment because it’s been quite a momentous one.

“This club is geared for it and it is important now for me to go and put a team together who can compete at that level.”

Chippenham will be handed the league title on Saturday at Hardenhuish Park and Collier admits that will be the moment when the club’s achievements this term truly sink in.

“The season has been an absolute one off,” he concluded.

“The team spirit and the togetherness of this squad may have got us an extra 10 points.

“There were times when we were losing football matches and we were behind with only minutes to go and we’ve come back and won, due to the resilience of everybody in and around the squad.

“The attitude has been absolutely spot on and there is no denying that after 46 games, to have 100-odd points deserves to win any title.”
