SCOTT Mitchell claimed a stunning five-wicket haul as Trowbridge made it five wins on the spin at the top of the WEPL Wiltshire table with a thumping 101-run success at Calne.

The hosts won the toss and elected to field and Joseph Clare (3-35) caused Trowbridge all sorts of problems early on as they slipped to 14-3.

The middle and lower order helped hold Trowbridge’s innings together, with number seven Tom Oakley making the most significant contribution before he was run out for 47 as the visitors were eventually dismissed for 203.

Calne’s reply got off to a strong start as they passed 50 without loss, but Mitchell (5-43) soon began to turn the screw and a devastating spell alongside George Reed (3-6) saw the home side slump from 52-0 to 73-7 before the innings eventually subsided for 102 in the 27th over.

Skipper Mike Reynolds is delighted with Trowbridge’s form but he is not getting carried away ahead of a run of tough fixtures, starting at home to Swindon tomorrow.

“We have got some serious momentum behind us but the next three games are probably going to be the three toughest games,” said Reynolds.

“We did very well on Saturday and showed our backbone. At three wickets down with not many overs bowled, we were in a bit of bother, but the middle order dug deep and got us to 200.

“That was a really good score considering where we were and Tom Oakley was the lynchpin of that but he had some good support as well.

“To then go out and bowl as well as we did was superb. Scott led from the front, he is a veteran for us but he is still bowling beautifully. He bowled straight and strong.

“Calne came hard at us early on but we just had to be patient as we knew that if we could get a couple of wickets, we would be right back in the game.”

Elsewhere, some brave late stands saw Warminster sneak to a narrow one-wicket win at Marlborough to keep Pete Hickerton’s side second in the table.

Three wickets each from Rory Cullinan and Wouter Ras kept Marlborough down to below-par total of 145-9 off their 50 overs.

Equally good bowling from Fraser Gordon (3-27) then had the Warminster reply in trouble and Marlborough on the brink of victory at 112-8.

However, Dominic Webb and Alex Adam guided the visitors to 140 before the latter fell but last man Bradley Small helped them over the line.
