ST LAURENCE School’s U13s boys team narrowly missed out on glory at the national ‘Chance To Shine’ finals at Northamptonshire CCC.

The Bradford on Avon school secured a final spot when Rhys Appleton hit two runs off the final ball to tie their semi final with the Midlands before James Seller was on target in the bowl-off to win it.

In the final, captain Rory Howell took a hat-trick but despite limiting Hutton Grammar School, Preston, to 44, St Laurence finished two runs short, Leo Harris scoring an unbeaten 20.

Teacher Ben Taylor said: “It was a fantastic experience to play on a first class county ground, to compete against the best schools in the country and meet former England international James Taylor.

“Although bitterly disappointed not to be crowned National Champions, in reaching the final the players recognised the enormity of their achievement and were rightly proud of representing St Laurence on a national stage.’’ The squad were Rory Howell (captain), Rhys Appleton, Hugo Long, Leo Harris, Will Oxley, Joe Daddow, James Seller, Oliver Felstead, Ollie Withers and Charlie Hindmarsh.
