MORE THAN 600 young athletes representing 43 primary and secondary schools competed at Wiltshire’s first Winter School Games Festival, hosted by Dauntsey’s School, where the finals of five sports were held.

The primary hockey event saw Ramsbury emerge winners against Winterslow after a golden-goal period and penalty flicks.

More golden goals were seen in the U13 netball, with South Wiltshire Grammar eventually beating Lavington.

South Wiltshire Grammar were also in the U15 final but lost out to Warneford.

Hardenhuish were impressive in remaining undefeated to win the Rugby Sevens finals.

St Joesph's School enjoyed great success in the New Age Kurling event, winning both gold and bronze with Castlemead separating them to pick up silver.

A new event for the Games was Modern Triathlon - a relay event consisting of a swim, run and laser pistol shooting.

The lead changed with every discipline, Lavington and Matravers holding their nerve to win the boys and girls respectively.

The event was organised by Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP) in conjunction with School Games organisers.

Young leaders from Lavington School, Royal Wootton Basset Academy and Devizes School supported officials from England Hockey, Wiltshire County Netball Association, RFU, Wiltshire Council and Pentathlon GB and volunteers from local clubs.

Alma Borthwick, organiser of the event, said: "The Spring Festival has been a great addition to the School Games programme and we are very grateful to Dauntsey’s for allowing us to use their fantastic facilities.”
