WILTSHIRE golfers David Howell and Jordan Smith both came up short in their bid to win a place at this month's US Open at today's qualifier in Surrey.

Howell opted to bring his qualification campaign to an end after withdrawing from the second of two 18-hole rounds.

The 42-year-old did have a slight shoulder complaint as he took part in the qualification event at Surrey’s Walton Heath Golf Club.

With a field of more than 100, the two-time Ryder Cup winner and Derry Hill's Smith were looking to seal spots in next week’s second major of the year at Shinnecock Hills, New York, by finishing in the top 14.

Howell looked an unlikely candidate as his first round finished with a two over-par 74, placing him way down the pecking order.

Starting on the new course, Howell had a tricky front nine after hitting bogeys on the par-four third and fifth, while he did redeem himself slightly with a birdie-three on the third hole.

His back nine was more of the same as the Swindon star saw his qualification hopes slowly slip away from his grasp.

A birdie three on the 11th saw things moving in the right direction for Howell before another pair of bogeys the par-five 13 and 15, before Howell elected to sit out the second round.

Smith was in live contention for a place as he carded 69, leaving him three under-par after the opening round.

Heading out on the new course for the second round, Smith started well with a birdie-two on the second, before a run of six level-pars.

Hole nine saw him drop a shot with a bogey five and his bid ultimately fell away as further shots went at the 12th and 15th, despite a birdie at the 17th.
