THE last eight, quarter-finals and semi-finals, in the Wiltshire Ladies two wood singles at Avon were played on Tuesday evening and produced two finalists - Janice Bull (Amesbury) and former winner Sue Cooke (Box).

RESULTS

Quarter-finals (at Avon): Janice Bull (Amesbury) beat Lynne Cookson (Ramsbury & Ald) 17-8; Ann Roberts-Phare (North Wilts) beat Linda Young (Highworth) 15-14; Lucy Smith (Royal Wootton Bassett) lost to Sue Cooke (Box) 4-17; Dawn Toomer (Wilton) lost to Jean Collier (Box) 10-15.

Semi-finals: Bull beat R-Phare 17-7; Cooke beat Collier 15-11.

FOUR combinations in the south section of the draw, led by Ros Corke (Wilton), Cathy Burrows (Wilton), Marcia Hartley and Alex Jacobs (Box), booked their places in the showdown for a place in the county pairs final last Friday.

However, only three of the qualifiers for the quarters in the north are known but the other match between Supermarine’s Nicki Kemble-Young and Bev Millin and the Smith sisters Lucy and Katie (RWB) will be played to a finish on Saturday, June 23 from 10am.

The Marine duo were two shots up at home 13-11 at 14 ends when play was halted as Lucy Smith was feeling unwell and fainted. An ambulance was called and she was taken to hospital for observation.

“Due to the time when this happened the game could not be finished,” said north area controller Janet Willis.

“I have checked with Bowls England and this is okay within their rules for the match to be finished at the same venue within the date limits for the match to be completed. It will be resumed on June 23 at Supermarine with the final seven ends to be played,” added Willis.

North qualifiers were Linda Young (Highworth), Alison Fail (Purton) and Paula Meekins (Malmesbury) with one spot outstanding.

WILTSHIRE Ladies have made the best start for several years to their Johns Trophy, inter-county championship, campaign with an 124-109 away win against Dorset at Sherborne last weekend.

They currently top the west A group on shots difference from Somerset and will be hoping to keep the good run going when they travel to Tiverton next Saturday, June 23 to face Cornwall.

If they should be successful then they would have home advantage in their final group game against Somerset.

Wiltshire ladies have also been drawn away against Cornwall on Sunday, June 24 at Vivary Park, Taunton in the Walker Cup, ladies two fours inter-county competition.

This year they will play in the west region section of the Walker Cup, have a preliminary round bye and face Cornwall away at Taunton in round one.
