WARMINSTER continued their perfect start to the WEPL Wiltshire by claiming a sixth straight victory with a 120-run success over Marlborough at the weekend, climbing to the top of the table in the process.

Royal Wootton Bassett had started the day at the head of the standings after claiming five wins from five at the start of the season, but they surrendered that position following a first defeat at the hands of Swindon.

Pete Hickerton’s Warminster were a class above their visitors in all departments on Saturday, feeling confident enough to declare with the bat before ruthlessly bowling out Marlborough.

After Marlborough won the toss and elected to field, they would have been pleased with their start after dismissing Nick Hembury cheaply.

However, opener Tom Davie (69) and captain Hickerton (71) quickly turned the game in Warminster’s favour with a 141-run stand for the second wicket.

Even after both men departed, runs continued to flow for Warminster and they had reached 225-6 when Hickerton opted to declare with five overs still remaining in the innings.

Marlborough never looked like getting near that in reply as Elliot Hooper led a clinical home bowling attack to dismiss the visitors for 105.

He returned figures of 4-12 as each of the six Warminster players to bowl picked up a wicket.

Luke Johnstone, Harrison Painter and David West were the only Marlborough batsmen to reach double figures as they were bowled out in the 31st over.
